We were invited to a BBQ this weekend. While I haven't started my Whole30 yet, I still have a few food rules I never break. I always, always avoid nightshades.
What are nightshades?
- potatoes
- peppers
- tomatoes
- tomatillos
- eggplant
- goji berries
For me, it was a huge step forward in healing when I discovered I was sensitive to nightshades.
So back to our BBQ and my dilemma. My hubby was asked to make his amazing salsa. Not wanting to miss out or feel deprived, I decided to try making my own nightshade free salsa.
Here is the winning result.

- 2 cloves Garlic, minced
- 1 lime, juiced
- Salt to taste
Chop mango, red onion, radishes, cilantro and jicama.

This is amazing!! I wish I had found this sooner! Do you know how long this keeps? Or if you could freeze it?
I'm so glad you like it!! It definitely filled a void in my life! I would say it lasts about a week in the fridge. I have never tried to freeze it, but please let me know if that works for you!
I'm always reading about fermented salsa and I want to try it with this recipe. It would last a lot longer fermented.
I always end up eating all of it before it goes bad lol. It's just so good! I will come back and let you know if I end up trying the freeze.
Im intolerant to radishes can i use jalapenos in their place?
You could absolutely use jalapeƱos if you tolerate them. The point of this recipe though is to exclude all night shades since they can cause inflammation.
I had no onion or jicama, and made just a little bit with one radish and about a quarter cup of mango. I WISH I'D MADE MORE! I grated the radish and garlic, because it's easier for me than chopping. Ate it on beef "burgers" alongside sweet potato "fries" with sea salt and lime, and some steamed broccoli. Best meal I've had since starting AIP! Thank you.
I find it crazy another person with issues with my name (first and last). Hi other megan! I made this salsa tonight and I have to say it’s fantastic! I just didn’t put in the jicama and more lime juice shared it to my blog as well. Thanks
I added some avacado and it was so good. I have seen some with cucumber too but have not tried that. What a great base for salsa without NS.
I can't eat Mango--would peach or pineapple be a possible substitute? What about ginger instead of radishes? Anybody try ground ginger?
My husband is sensitive to nightshades but I really miss adding salsa to my cooking. THIS RECIPE IS AMAZING!! It's not spicy in a pepper-spicy way, but it's got a nice little kick to it. It's very satisfying in street tacos!
